DEA Take Back Day October 27th, 2018

On October 27th, 2018, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) will have it’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, an awareness campaign to promote the disposal of old and unused prescription drugs. ADAPT (Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team) has set up designated drop boxes in the county at various locations. See below for all locations.

Research shows that 70% of individuals who abuse prescription and/or over-the-counter medication get access to them from the medicine cabinet or household of a friend or family member. Raising awareness about prescription and over-the-counter medication abuse and building a safe and healthy community are the key goals of this joint project. This initiative encourages people to dispose of their old and unused prescription drugs at their local police station. In addition, it provides an education component to the public regarding the potential for abuse related to prescription and over-the-counter medication. Residents are urged to dispose at 16 locations that have permanent collection sites where they can dispose of medication 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

“We ask that residents clean out their medicine cabinet and visit their nearest permanent or temporary prescription medication collection site to discard their old or unused prescriptions and over-the-counter medications,” said Joel Torres, Manager of ADAPT. “The DEA National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and the permanent collection sites provide safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of medications while giving us an opportunity to educate the general public about the potential for the abuse of medications,” he added.
